Hewitt to face qualifier Spadea in Sydney
SYDNEY: Australian Lleyton Hewitt will open his Sydney International tennis title defence against American qualifier Vincent Spadea here on Monday.
Top seed Hewitt, chasing an unprecedented fifth title in Sydney, was back on the practice court Sunday after his second-round exit from the Adelaide International last week. Monday’s match will be the fourth meeting between Hewitt and Spadea, who reached as high as 18 on the world rankings last year before dropping to his current position of 75. Hewitt, the world Number 4, has won all three meetings with Spadea since 1998, with the most recent victory coming at Indian Wells in 2003.
Should Hewitt beat Spadea it could set up another grudge encounter with Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela in the second round. Chela, who was fined for spitting at Hewitt during a spiteful encounter at last year’s Australian Open, plays Austrian Jurgen Melzer in Monday’s opening round. American eighth seed Taylor Dent takes on Frenchman Arnaud Clement, who won his main draw place via the qualifiers. afp
